Friday afternoon at De La Cruz Stadium the Wolverines played hard, played exceptional High school football. But came up short by 1 in an overtime loss to Homestead High school.
Belen (1-3, 0-1) was strong and attacked for most of the first three quarters led by Brandon Silvestry’s 134 yards on 17 carries. Silvestry broke a 43-yard touchdown run which gave Belen a comfortable lead at 27-13 late in the third. Belen’s defense played well they had big plays at important times led by defensive ends Justin Lorenzo and Andres Garcia. Homestead's defense picked up its speed at this time and answered the challenge for the rest of the 4th quarter.
Homestead (3-1, 1-0 District 16-6A) Junior wide receiver Ermon Lane, caught 7 passes for 154 yards, got his 2nd touchdown of the game on a 38-yarder from quarterback Maurice Alexander. The Broncos tied it at 27 when Alexander got a two-point conversion. Alexander threw 4 touchdown passes and completed 11 of 17 for 211 yards and had no interceptions. Another 2 touchdown throws went to sophomore running back Johnnie Hankins, who also finished afternoon with 71 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown. Late in the OT period Hankins, caught a pass from Maurice for a 7-yard touchdown which put Homestead ahead for the rest on the game. Homestead has defeated Southridge, Coral Reef and Belen.
