While Westminster was
soul searching for an identity, thanks to losses to Westwood and La Salle they
might have just found their “mojo” at the 2012 Selective Recruiting
Invitational.
“We played real
consistent.” stated Westminster Centerfielder David Thompson, “I am feeling a
lot more comfortable (at the plate) now… and so does the whole team too”.
They came up with a
big win versus (2 time defending State Champions) Archbishop McCarthy, a
dramatic 5 homerun game that propelled them towards a win against Ferguson and
ultimately an invitational championship trophy with an 11-0 victory against
South West High.
Marc Sanchez struck
out eight in four innings and took home the MVP award.
Sanchez was named
Tournament MVP after going 2-0 in leading the Warriors (10-3) to four victories
in the esteemed field of competition.
Warrior’s leadoff
hitter Johnny Ruiz set the tone for the offense batting .500 in the tournament
keeps impressing the Westminster faithful in his first season as a member of
the Warriors, “I’m having a lot of fun. Coach Emil has done a great job in
taking me in. Chino (Daniel Sanchez), David (Thompson) and the rest of the guys
have accepted me and I am happy to be here” said Ruiz.
Outside of the loss
South West’s Carlos Pena still cherished the experience, “it was a great
experience. My first time playing on a field like this (Mark Light) and I had a
really good time… (we have to) Continue to work hard and push my teammates to
keep on working and trying to get better"
Jose Torres Head
Coach, "it's a first for them a very young team, ultimately they just weren't
mentally tough to come out and play like they are physically capable of."
